Nursing Pathways for First-Year Students
As a high school student interested in pursuing a BSN degree, you must first apply to MSMU as first-year student with the major of nursing. Once you are enrolled at Mount Saint Mary's and have completed your prerequisites (1-2 years), you are then eligible to be considered/apply to the BSN program (only for pre-nursing student, Direct entry nursing are automatically in the BSN program provided you have successfully completed all requirements). Admission to the BSN program is contingent upon successful completion of prerequisite courses and fulfilling the BSN admission requirements. This will be the focus of your time during your 1-2 years as a nursing student.
As a nursing student, you will enroll in a combination of nursing prerequisites, Liberal Arts Core Education (LACE) courses, electives and foundational courses in English, mathematics and science. The rigor of your high school math and sciences courses – as well as your overall academic achievement – will determine your nursing track at MSMU: Direct Entry or Pre-Nursing.
Direct Entry to the Nursing Program (4-year program with direct admission to the BSN program)
Students who apply to Mount Saint Mary’s University Los Angeles by January 15 will be considered for the Direct Entry to Nursing program. After January 15, admission to Direct Entry is base on spaces available. And will automatically be admitted into the BSN program at the end of your first year provided you have successfully completed all requirements.
- One year to complete prerequisites and foundational courses
- Students admitted to Direct Nursing Entry will automatically be admitted into the BSN program at the end of your first year provided you have successfully completed all requirements.
- This is an accelerated pre-nursing curriculum that requires taking 18 units each semester, including two lab science courses each semester.
Pre-Nursing (5-year program)
- Two years to complete prerequisites and foundational courses
- Consideration for admission to BSN program at the end of your second year
Pre-Nursing Pathway for Transfer Students
If you have taken college courses but do not have a bachelor’s degree yet, you are a transfer student. As a transfer student interested in pursuing a BSN degree, you have the option to apply to the Pre-Nursing program at Mount Saint Mary's University. Whether you have not taken any prerequisite courses or have only completed a few, you can join the Pre-Nursing program and work towards completing the prerequisite requirements for the BSN program.
As a pre-nursing transfer student, you will enroll in courses listed above to complete any outstanding prerequisites (see Nursing Prerequisites above). Upon successful completion of the prerequisites, you will be eligible to apply to the BSN program. Admission to the BSN program is not guaranteed.
You may apply with up to two prerequisites in progress at the time of application. Of these two prerequisites, only one can be a science (Chemistry, Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, and Microbiology). Proof of enrollment (i.e. course schedule in the form of a PDF or education plan from the respective institution) must be sent to MSMU by the application deadline.
