If you’re interested in getting a minor in biology, the Mount offers three different pathways: biological sciences, environmental sciences and environmental studies.

BS in Biological Sciences

The Bachelor of Science in Biology degree is designed for students wishing to pursue careers in scientific research and/or medicine. Thinking about medical school? This is the degree for you. This degree provides a rigorous and well-rounded background in the biological sciences, while also meeting the prerequisites and exam requirements necessary for research graduate schools and medical schools. In this major, students are highly encouraged to do research in order to gain the academic and personal skills necessary for these careers.

The BS in Biological Sciences with an Environmental Science emphasis is designed for students seeking careers in environmental science, including those in research, nonprofit organizations, private industry and governmental agencies. Core courses and electives prepare students for these pursuits with a rigorous, well-rounded program that includes diverse opportunities for experiential field work.

 

This degree is for students wishing to pursue careers in professions such as dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician’s assistant and more. Requirements and electives can meet the prerequisites for these professional programs and students should be mindful of those requirements when choosing elective courses. Additional courses for the major (such as a second semester of physics) and completion of service hours may also be required for admission into advanced degree programs. BA in Biological Sciences

This degree is designed to be flexible for students who wish to be well-rounded and free to explore the biological sciences. Requirements and electives give students the chance to chart their own path, creating either a broad-based curriculum or specializing in biology classes of their choosing.

BA in Environmental Studies

The BA in Environmental Studies is specifically designed for students wishing to pursue an interdisciplinary degree in the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities aimed at bettering our communities and the world. This major will prepare students for a broad range of careers in research, non-profit organizations, governmental agencies, law and policy, journalism, and more. Core courses and electives are meant to prepare students for these pursuits with a rigorous well-rounded program that includes diverse opportunities for experiential field work.

Kickstart your biology journey with hands-on labs and an exciting field trip to the tide pools at Leo Carrillo in Malibu to observe marine life. The Intro to Biology series covers essential topics like cell structure, function metabolism, inheritance and genetics and more, while developing your scientific reading and writing skills.
