The History

A large building and enterance with many windows and rows of hedges in front.

The library on the Doheny Campus was originally housed in Building 2, one of the seven historic mansions comprising Estelle Doheny’s Chester Place enclave. By the 1990s, the growing collection and weight of the book stacks on aging joists — as well as the need to support graduate-level research and technology — necessitated a new library. Named for a Mount trustee and benefactor, the J. Thomas McCarthy Library opened in 1999 as part of the Sister Magdalen Coughlin Learning Complex. Its architecture is very much in keeping with the historic character of Chester Place and the Victorian charm of the West Adams district modern, but the modern, open floor plan meets the needs of students ranging from Associate of Arts students to doctoral candidates in physical therapy.

Today

Students have access to ample studying space on the 1st and 2nd floors as well as five reservable group study rooms. The majority of the book stacks are located on the 2nd floor. The 24-hour computer lab, where students can engage in silent study, is located to the left of the entrance to the building.
