MS in Education and California Teaching Credential
The MS in Education and California Teaching Credential programs are designed for individuals who aspire to start a teaching career. Students earn both a Master of Science in Education and a Teaching Credential, resulting in a more rewarding and comprehensive educational experience. Choose from the following credential programs within this degree:
- Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential
This credential is designed for individuals who wish to teach grades K-6 (i.e. Elementary). - Preliminary Single Subject Credential
This credential is designed for individuals who wish to teach grades 6-12 (i.e. Secondary) or teach one subject matter across all levels (TK-12). - Special Education Credential: Mild/Moderate Disabilities
This credential focuses on meeting the needs of students with mild to moderate disabilities, providing you with the tools to create inclusive and supportive learning environments. - Special Education Credential: Deaf and Hard of Hearing
This specialized credential prepares you to work with students who are deaf or hard of hearing, enabling effective communication and educational support.

Teachers can clear their credential via our two-year or one-year program, depending on work experience.
MS in Education for Experienced Teachers
This program is designed for educators who already hold a teaching credential and want to further enhance their skills and expertise with a master’s in education. The MS in Education offers two specialized tracks:
- MS in Education: Instructional Leadership
This program focuses on developing leadership skills and expertise in instructional practices, preparing students to take on leadership roles within schools or districts and drive positive change and innovation in education. - MS in Education: Individually Designed Program
This program provides the flexibility to design a program of study that aligns with student’s specific interest and career goals.

*The Preliminary and Induction Teacher Preparation Programs meet the standards for and have been approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC), leading to a California Preliminary or Clear Teaching Credential. Students who wish to practice in a state other than California will have additional licensing requirements to complete prior to practicing in a state outside of California. Prior to enrollment, prospective students must review the Preliminary Teaching Preparation Programs professional licensure webpage to determine whether this program meets the educational requirements in a specific state. Once this information has been reviewed, contact the Education department at educationdepartment@msmu.edu to discuss the process of obtaining a teaching or cleared credential in a state outside of California.
